Professor Kofi Agyekum, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama to call the national security operatives to order before he is accused of condoning illegality.

According to the professor, he believes the president is not in support of the actions of some operatives who are allegedly abusing the authority granted to them.

He warned that if the president remains silent, it could affirm suspicions that he endorses the ongoing illegalities.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 10, 2025, Professor Agyekum referenced a recent incident involving masked officers, believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB)—who stormed the residence of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev Ntim Fordjour.

He also mentioned other similar instances where officers reportedly entered people’s homes without proper procedure.

“If your calf becomes bigger than your thigh, then it means there is a problem.

“There is no way a leader should remain aloof while his subordinates misbehave. You shouldn’t allow someone you have given authority to overuse that power.” (A proverbial statement to signify imbalance of power.)

“What is going on? I don’t believe President Mahama is happy with what the security forces are doing, invading people’s privacy and attacking individuals. We haven’t heard anything positive from them lately that warrants applause.

“That’s why I’m saying that if you’re an elderly person and children are misbehaving, and you watch on without taking action, when trouble arises, you’ll also be blamed,” he said.

The UG don added, “So, I plead with the president: I know this is not what he wants, so he should act now because they are using his authority to overstep their bounds.”

He cautioned the national security operatives to exercise caution in their dealings, warning, “One day, they might not have the strength to defend themselves when accountability comes.”
