According to Bloomberg, President-Elect John Dramani Mahama is considering Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister in his incoming cabinet.
According to Ghana Web on Sunday, December 15, 2024, Forson, an experienced accountant with a strong academic background, was previously the deputy finance minister during Mahama’s administration.
The President-Elect is anticipated to announce his cabinet after his inauguration on January 7, 2024, following his decisive victory in the December 7 elections.
However, while persons acquainted with the situation have given information about Forson’s probable appointment, it has not been publicly announced.
Dr. Forson has a degree in taxation from the University of Oxford and a PhD in finance from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
His abilities, together with his political experience, make him a viable candidate for the role.
Forson is currently the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in parliament, and he previously served on the Finance Committee for almost eight years, where he was an outspoken campaigner for state expenditure openness.
The finance minister’s position will be critical to Ghana’s recovery as the country faces substantial economic issues. These include rising inflation, which has been above 20% for more than two years, and a growing national debt.
The government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, including a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund in 2022, will be significantly reliant on the next finance minister’s decisions.
