The Accra Mayor has stated that the move would support the Assembly’s decongestion agenda The Accra Mayor has stated that the move would support the Assembly’s decongestion agenda

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified its revenue mobilisation efforts, with the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, leading a special operation at Makola Market to inspect Business Operating Permits (BOPs) of traders.

The exercise, which formed part of the Assembly’s strategy to boost compliance and strengthen internally generated funds, saw the mayor joined by the Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful, and a team of revenue collectors.

Speaking during the operation, Mayor Allotey expressed concern over what he described as widespread non-compliance among shop owners.

He urged traders to pay their permits promptly to avoid prosecution, stressing that enforcement would be stepped up.

“We cannot continue to look on while some shop owners refuse to comply with the rules.

The law is clear, and we will not hesitate to prosecute offenders.

Everyone must contribute their fair share to run the city,” he warned.

As part of efforts to modernise Makola Market, the Mayor also announced plans to redevelop existing shops into three- to four-storey facilities to accommodate more traders.

The move, he said, would support the Assembly’s decongestion agenda while creating a more organised and conducive space for commercial activities.

In addition to the BOP inspections, the Mayor joined the Assembly’s team in collecting market tolls, where he emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in revenue collection.

He urged officers to work diligently to ensure efficiency in mobilising funds critical to the city’s development.
