Ghana’s former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, has called for unity, reflection, and collaboration following the country’s recent election, which resulted in a change of government.

In a social media post that has sparked national conversations, the former deputy minister acknowledged the wide range of emotions that have emerged in the aftermath of the December elections.

“From blame games and resentment to hindsight regrets over past decisions, actions, and inactions,” she wrote, adding that these sentiments offered an “invaluable opportunity for growth and understanding.”

Asiamah-Adjei proposed six guiding principles – termed the “Ps”- to navigate the challenges ahead and foster a prosperous and united New Patriotic Party (NPP) in opposition.

1.Past: Reflecting on history to learn from past mistakes and honour those who paved the way.

2.People: Prioritising the welfare of Ghanaians by focusing on health, education, and economic opportunities.

3.Personality: Championing integrity, empathy, and vision as the bedrock of leadership and citizenship.

4.Purpose: Striving for economic development paired with social justice.

5.Priority: Establishing clear priorities in key areas such as infrastructure, trade, technology, agriculture, and renewable energy.

6.Possibility: Understanding the population to harness opportunities that work best for them.

“These principles lay the groundwork for a hopeful future – a future marked by unity, generosity, and selflessness,” she wrote.

The former deputy minister, who doubled as MP for Akuapem North, reflected on the NPP’s transition to opposition, urging party members to embrace the opportunity for introspection.

“The fervent call for change has been heard loud and clear, and now it is time to collectively support the new government in steering Ghana towards a brighter future,” she added.

While the NPP is in opposition, Asiamah-Adjei emphasised the need to emerge stronger and more united, using this period to learn from past governance decisions.

She expressed optimism for Ghana’s future, urging collaboration over division. “May the journey ahead be one where we all benefit, where collaboration trumps division, and where the promise of a better Ghana becomes a tangible reality for every citizen,” she said.

Ending her statement, Asiamah-Adjei made it clear that her message was one of sober reflection and not an incitement to violence or disrespect. “This write-up is for sober reflection and not to promote violence or disrespect in any form,” she stressed.
