Former Ghana international Alfred Duncan has revealed that his decision to retire from the Black Stars in 2019 was due to a lack of respect from the national team setup.

Duncan, who made his Ghana debut in a 2016 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique, earned just nine caps before stepping away from international duty at the peak of his career.

Speaking to Sporty FM, the defensive midfielder explained his decision to walk away.

“With the national team, it was complicated because it was my decision to quit. I wasn’t getting the respect I think I deserved,” Duncan stated.

“For a player like me, when I reached the peak of my career, I thought I deserved more respect, which I wasn’t getting enough of. I felt it was best to step aside for the young ones or those they believed were right for the team to have the chance to play.”

Duncan has spent most of his career in Italy, featuring for clubs such as Inter Milan, Sassuolo, Fiorentina, and, most recently, Cagliari. Despite his early exit from international football, he remains one of Ghana’s most accomplished midfielders in European football.
