Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shared heartfelt memories and deep admiration for the late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, as he joined the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his spouse, Samira Bawumia, as well as several officials, to observe the 13th Commemorative Adua in Tamale on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

According to the former president, the annual Adua is not only a solemn period of prayer but also a moment of personal sadness for those who had the privilege of working closely with the late Aliu Mahama.

Recounting his relationship with the late Vice President, Nana Akufo-Addo noted that their friendship began in the 1990s during efforts to strengthen the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale.

He described Aliu Mahama as an extraordinary host whose home became a gathering place for party leaders.

“His house was where we would all go to socialise and eat. He was a most generous and hospitable host,” the former president recalled.

He further praised Aliu Mahama as an honourable and respectable statesman whose integrity and devotion to Ghana’s development left an enduring mark on the nation.

“This was a very honourable, respectable man, a man of great integrity, who worked very hard for our country, and his death continues to be a matter of profound sadness for me,” he said.

Former President Akufo-Addo also expressed his appreciation to the family of the late Vice President for remembering him and extending an invitation to participate in the commemoration.

“I am grateful to the family for remembering me and inviting me to be part of this ceremony, and I wish them—Farouk, his brothers, his sister whom I call ‘photocopy’—all of them, the best of luck and the continuing blessings of the Almighty God,” he added.

The 13th Adua marks over a decade since the passing of Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Ghana’s first Muslim Vice President, whose legacy of humility, service, and dedication remains widely revered.
