Ghana has recorded a landmark moment in its sporting history after Portia Oppong became the country’s first female FIFA Beach Soccer referee.

The achievement, which the Member of Parliament has celebrated for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, revealed Oppong presented her official FIFA referee badge to him at his office.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Acquah described the moment as both historic and deeply inspiring, praising the young official’s journey and determination.

Oppong, a native of Akim Aboabo and an alumna of Attafuah Senior High Technical School, told the MP about her path in sport, one marked by perseverance and versatility.

According to Acquah, she has explored and excelled in multiple sporting disciplines before reaching the global stage as a FIFA-accredited referee.

“As the first Ghanaian female to attain this remarkable feat, her achievement is both historic and deeply inspiring,” the MP wrote. “Her journey clearly shows resilience, discipline and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

The milestone has sparked pride not only in Akim Aboabo but across the wider Akim Oda constituency, where her success is being hailed as a symbol of what is possible for young women in sport.

Acquah offered prayers and well wishes for Oppong as she continues her career, expressing hope that her success will open doors for others.

Her breakthrough comes at a time when global football authorities are pushing for greater inclusion and representation of women in officiating, particularly in emerging disciplines such as beach soccer.

For many in Ghana, Portia Oppong’s rise is more than a personal triumph; it is a statement that Ghanaian women can compete, lead and excel on the world stage.
