President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) system now running Tema Port was developed by young Ghanaians.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the $1.5 billion Tema Port Expansion Project, Mahama said the locally developed AI algorithm enables faster and more predictable operations at the port.

According to the President, the AI system was created by students from the University of Ghana, Legon, following a challenge posed by Meridian Port Services (MPS) executive, Mohamed Samara.

The young developers now operate the algorithm at the port, contributing directly to its efficiency.

“The AI algorithm that this port uses was developed by young Ghanaians. Algorithms show it how to manage the containers and make everything predictable so that work goes on faster,” Mahama stated.

He emphasised that the system is part of Tema Port’s broader transformation into one of Africa’s most modern and technologically advanced ports.

With the arrival of additional cranes in 2026 and 2027, Tema Port is expected to become one of the fastest-turnaround ports on the continent, cementing its status as a key West African logistics hub.

Mahama also highlighted the wider impact of the expansion project, noting that it has created employment opportunities for thousands of Ghanaians across engineering, logistics, and technical roles, while fostering skills development in emerging technologies such as AI.

“This port is not just about infrastructure; it is about people, innovation, and opportunity. Young Ghanaians are running the algorithm that makes this port efficient,” the President added.

The commissioning of Phase I and II of the Tema Port Expansion Project represents a milestone in Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a logistics and maritime hub for West Africa, combining advanced technology with strategic public-private partnerships.
