Ho, Volta Region – Hon. Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shared fond memories of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady and wife of late former President Jerry John Rawlings, following her passing on October 23, 2025.

In an interview with Tony Mark-Boye, morning show host at GBC Volta Star Radio, on the morrow of her passing, Agbavitor recalled Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ impactful community work, which inspired him to join the Young Cadres after sixth form and has never looked back ever since.

“Right around 10 o’clock, I was in a meeting and somebody came saying Konadu has passed. My initial reaction was it was a fake story,” he said, expressing shock at her demise.

Agbavitor highlighted Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ significant contributions to the NDC, including her idea to adopt the umbrella as the party’s logo, as shared by Prof. Kwame Addo, who designed the logo with her support. He recalled the distinctive red beret worn by NDC 31st December women movement members, making the movement striking and unique.

The Volta Regional Chairman emphasized Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ pivotal role in women’s empowerment, particularly after the Beijing Conference. “The person who made women more politically conscious and active was Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings,” he stated.

While acknowledging her strengths, Agbavitor reminiscing a very low point in her political career cited one of her later actions which involved the formation of the National Democratic Party

“I felt she betrayed the cause of the NDC, but humans make mistakes. Still, I think her strengths far outweigh her weaknesses” Agbavitor averred.

Agbavitor announced plans to immortalize Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and her husband in various ways. He urged party members and Ghanaians to observe the three days of mourning directed by the president and prayed for strength to navigate this challenging time. He extended heartfelt condolences to the family, the NDC, and the nation.

Tributes have poured in from across Ghana, recognizing Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ transformative role in women’s empowerment and national development.
