Buy now, pay later giant Afterpay has suffered a major outage, leaving millions of global users unable to make payments.

The outage took place about 2pm on Monday afternoon and affected the company’s platforms in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

Every part of the platform has been hit by the outage, including its consumer portal, mobile application and in-store API, according to its website.

‘We are experiencing an outage at the moment that is affecting services,’ an Afterpay spokesperson told Nine News.

‘Our team is working hard to resolve this ASAP and we’ll provide another update shortly.’

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the major outage are ongoing.

Afterpay is a popular buy now, pay later provider that allows customers to buy items immediately and pay them off over four interest-free installments.

About 3.5million Australians use the service, among its 24million global users.
