Former Black Stars midfielder, Afriyie Acquah was at the center of attention once again after missing a penalty during the Monday All Stars match, a moment that instantly reignited painful memories of the 2015 AFCON final.

Midway through the friendly encounter, Acquah stepped up to take a penalty for his side.

His low effort to the goalkeeper’s right was well-read and parried away by the goalkeeper, before a teammate blasted the rebound high over the bar.

What should have been a lighthearted charity match quickly turned nostalgic for all the wrong reasons.

As clips of the miss circulated online, fans couldn’t help but recall that unforgettable night in Equatorial Guinea, when Ghana squandered a 2–0 lead in the penalty shootout to Ivory Coast, losing 9–8, with Acquah among those who failed to convert from the spot.

The reactions online were a mix of humour, frustration, and lingering heartbreak. Many fans drew a direct line between Monday’s miss and that fateful night in Bata, suggesting that Acquah still hasn’t escaped the ghosts of AFCON 2015.

Some lamented that nothing had changed after a decade, while others sarcastically called it “a reminder of why Ghana’s trophy drought continues.”

A few even joked that Afriyie Acquah must have “AFCON penalties on his mind” every time he steps up to take one.
