Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rocky Dawuni

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rocky Dawuni has expressed support for Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

This follows an alleged assassination attempt on the head of state, reportedly linked to policies introduced after taking office, which some perceive as a threat.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie during the launch of the ‘Black Star Experience’ on May 1, 2025, Rocky Dawuni emphasised the need for Africans to take charge of their own affairs.

He emphasised that it is time Africans are allowed to do things on their terms without the influence of the West.

“Africans need to be in charge of their affairs. We can decide what is good for us. Right now, the people of Africa want something new. We have tried so many dimensions of political leadership, and the payoff has not reached the people of a continent that is blessed so much means we deserve more… We want leadership that represents the aspirations of our people, righteous leadership, and a leadership that elevates who we are as a people.

“What is happening in Burkina Faso isn’t about only Tarore but the feeling that is going on in the youth of Africa. This is the age of Africa and we demand to do this according to our terms… This is the vision and the beginning of the new Africa,” he said.

The four-time Grammy Award nominee further noted that in five years to come Africans should be able to utilise natural resources without interference from the West.

“In five years there should be development, empowering our people, our resources should be used in the advancement of our people. All our people should be raised out of deprivation and utilizing our God-given gifts is to lead humanity to where it should go,” he added.
