A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has said he is convinced that his brother, Gregory Afoko, was framed for the death of Adams Mahama, a former Upper East Regional Chairman of the party.

Speaking on Starr FM on September 4, 2025, the party stalwart claimed that the allegations against his brother were false, adding that he himself would have been the target and accused of the crime if he had been in the region at the time of the incident.

Gregory Afoko files fresh bail application after nearly 10 years on remand

“Greg was lied upon; he was framed. They said Greg was the one who killed Adams. I was in Bolga at the time. I left Bolga and was going to Wa because we were on a regional tour across the country.

“Kwabena Agyapong and me, with three other executives who we were supposed to go with but failed to show up in the last minute. I believe strongly that if I had not left Bolga and gone into the Upper West Region, they would have said I did it. I believe strongly that they would have said I did it. And they started screaming ‘Oh, Gregory Afoko has done this’.”

Afoko went on to clarify that his brother, Gregory Afoko, at the time of his arrest and trial, was granted bail and met all the conditions, dispelling earlier reports that he had failed to do so.

“How many years of trial now? How many years? And you see, according to the constitution and the laws of Ghana’s Supreme Court, when somebody is allowed bail, is given bail and meets all the bail conditions, none held back. I’m repeating this because at the time, some other media houses and other media personalities went around saying that he didn’t meet the bail conditions. He met all and it’s on record,” he insisted.

Afoko revealed that even after securing bail, his brother was still detained and denied release following an alleged call, citing what he described as ‘orders from above.’

“… Can you imagine that they refused to give him bail? He was given bail by the court but at the last minute at the courthouse when he was to sign and go, the police officer who brought him got a phone call, went out, came back and said, ‘Hey, put those handcuffs back on him; Orders from above, he will not go on bail’; And they took him away,” he fumed.

    Background

In 2015, Gregory Afoko was charged with murder after his arrest for alleged involvement in an attack that led to the death of the NPP’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

Mahama died after he was doused in acid in front of his home in the capital town of the Upper East Region, Bolgatanga.

Gregory Afoko granted bail after nearly 10 years on remand for murder

In 2025, however, after nearly 9 years on trial, Gregory Afoko was granted GH¢500,000 bail with two sureties.
