Afenyo-Markin and his allies are ‘devious extortionists and political mercenaries’ – Sammy Gyamfi

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has described persons behind what he considers sustained attacks on the institution as “devious extortionists and political mercenaries”.

Mr Gyamfi’s comments form part of an escalating political dispute with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over GoldBod’s finances and operations. The Effutu MP has alleged that GoldBod has incurred losses amounting to GH¢22 billion and has questioned the management of the institution.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has also warned that GoldBod officials could face stringent bail conditions if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power, drawing parallels with the conditions attached to some former government officials currently facing investigations.

Mr Gyamfi, however, has rejected the Minority Leader’s allegations, insisting that GoldBod’s audited financial statements for 2025 show an operational surplus of GH¢907 million and an overall surplus of GH¢5.4 billion. He said the institution’s record should be assessed based on verifiable financial and operational results.

“These are devious extortionists and political mercenaries who will come at you with lies to tarnish your reputation in the hope that you will fold and settle for what they call ‘compulsory arbitration’ and through that, oil their palms,” he said.

Mr Gyamfi further accused his critics of using allegations and pressure to force their targets into submission, but insisted that such tactics would not work against him. “Well, this time around, they found the wrong target,” he said.
