Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused some customs officials of engaging in a corrupt scheme involving the sale of essential containers and high-tension cables meant for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

    Key Allegations:

🔹 Certain customs officials allegedly collude with private individuals to sell ECG containers after suppliers have been fully paid.

🔹 The stolen cables and equipment are then sold back to ECG at inflated prices.

His claims follow a National Security investigation that exposed a large-scale illegal operation where stolen ECG high-tension cables were melted down to produce aluminum poles for export.

    Ongoing Investigations & Arrests:

📌 Eight Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians have been arrested in connection with the illicit trade.

📌 Two companies have been identified as major players in the scheme.

📌 Over 1,300 ECG containers have reportedly vanished from the port.

On Friday, March 28, Energy Minister John Jinapor and National Security officials inspected a manufacturing site in Kpong, where the stolen cables were allegedly processed.

    Government Response:

⚖️ Chief Superintendent Alhassan Osman (National Security Council) confirmed that the scheme has been running for several years, with criminals profiting from stolen ECG materials.

⚡ Energy Minister John Jinapor vowed to retrieve the missing ECG containers and hold those responsible accountable.

“Since 2019, this crime has been ongoing. The then government slept on it. This government will not allow it to continue. As Minister, I will ensure that we curtail this. I want my containers, simple as that,” he declared.

Authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle the illegal network and recover the stolen ECG assets.
