Veteran sports analyst Micheal Oti Adjei, in a candid assessment of the Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, disclosed that Otto tainted his tenure with the team’s humiliating failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on Joy Sports’ SportsLink, Adjei remarked, “The manner in which the Black Stars failed to qualify for the Nations Cup- AFCON- took so much from his credit that he’s struggling to get it back.”

“Failing to qualify is unbefitting of a nation that has made it to every tournament since 2006, unbefitting of a nation that reached the semifinals eight straight times; that era took a lot of credit from him as a coach,” he continued.

Adjei also disclosed on the show that though he is sceptical Otto is the right man for the team, he believes he has earned the right to lead the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

“I think the time we should have sacked Otto is gone. I think we should have sacked him when he failed to qualify for the AFCON.

“I had a lot of arguments with football officials about why they retained him after the AFCON failure, but with what he has done during the World Cup qualifiers, winning all but one draw, he has earned the right to lead the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” he stated.

Nearly a year on since the Black Stars‘ shocking elimination from the continental showpiece, Addo’s efforts to rebuild momentum and win fans’ support ahead of the 2026 World Cup have been met with scepticism and criticism as the missteps of those qualifying matches continue to haunt his leadership.
