The 23rd edition of the Annual Schools and Colleges Athletics Tournament kicked off on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the grounds of Sekondi College, showcasing some of the finest young athletic talents in the country.
The event brought together top athletes from various senior high schools to compete in a wide range of track and field disciplines, including the 4x400m, 4x200m, 800m, high jump, discus, shot put, and long jump.
Day one of the competition delivered high energy, fierce competition, and a glimpse of future national stars, as schools battled it out for top honors.
In the boys’ category, Adiembra Senior High School (ADISEC) dominated the track. They clinched first place in the 4x200m relay with an impressive time of 1:32.88, followed by a strong performance in the 5000m, clocking 16:49.00. ADISEC capped their stellar day with a win in the 4x100m finals, crossing the line in 46.16 seconds.
The girls’ events were equally thrilling, with Shama Senior High School (SHAAS) emerging as the standout team.
SHAAS took gold in the long jump with a leap of 4.35 meters and followed it up with commanding wins in the 4x100m (53.67 seconds), 4x200m (53.87 seconds), and 800m (2:25.84).
Field events also saw notable performances. ADISEC added to their medal tally with a victory in the shot put, recording a throw of 10.10 meters.
Meanwhile, Diabene Senior High Technical School claimed the high jump title in the girls’ category with a clearance of 1.40 meters.
Attendance at the tournament was impressive, and Mr. Eric, Secretary of the Zone, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the students for showing up in large numbers to cheer on the athletes.
“We met and discussed that the athletes need their support. When they are here performing, their colleagues shouldn’t be in the class learning, they should all come and throw their support behind the athletes. They bought into that and this year the support has been massive,” he said.
The tournament continues on Friday, May 16, 2025, with the final round of events set to determine the overall champions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
With momentum on their side, teams like ADISEC and SHAAS will be looking to extend their dominance, while others aim to mount a late surge.
The 23rd Annual Schools and Colleges Athletics Tournament will officially come to a close by the end of the day’s competition.
