The family of the late Upper East Regional New patriotic party’s Chairman, Adams Mahama in a press release, responded to the comments of the former National Chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko on the death of the late Upper East Regional Chairman after ten years of legal battle at the law courts.

Mr. Paul Afoko during an interview with Bola Ray on the star chat program on starr FM explained the circumstances that led to the death of the late Upper East Regional Chairman and how his brother, Gregory Afoko who is the main suspect is trial at the court.

According to Paul Afoko, his brother Gregory Afoko is innocent of whatever he has been accused of on the demise of Adams Mahama and that his brother was framed as the killer of the late Upper East Regional Chairman.

The former National Chairman indicated that, on that faithful day, he was out of the Upper East Region with his campaign team else he would have been accused of killing the late Adams Mahama but yet still his brother was arrested with others just because the party hated him.

In response to Paul Afoko’s interview, the family has issued a press release condemning the comments of the former National Chairman of the NPP.

Part of the press release sates ‘ To Paul Afoko, we issue this direct and final advice: cease defiling the memory of our beloved Adams. Stop weaving his name into your self-serving lies. Your decision to break a decade of silence is not a market of courage; it is a testament to your shameful character. That you can speak while a widow still grieves her husband and children grow up forever haunted by their father’s absence is not a point of pride”.

“Our beloved Adams did not die quickly. He suffered. And in his final, agonizing moments, with a strength that defies comprehension, he named his attackers: Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi. That was the will of Allah, a truth etched in his final breath, and no amount of political maneuvering or false narration can ever erase it” the statement added.

On February 21, 2025, the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, granted Gregory Afoko bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 with two sureties to be justified.

    *Accusations and trial developments*

Afoko is accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi, who has already been convicted, to murder Adams Mahama in May 2015.

A seven-member jury returned a split verdict in April 2024, acquitting Afoko of murder and conspiracy to commit murder with a 4-3 decision, but unanimously convicting Alangdi of conspiracy. The court subsequently sentenced Alangdi to death, a decision he has since appealed.

Below is the press release from Adams Mahama

*A Cry from the Wounded Heart: A Statement from the Family of the Murdered Adams Mahama*

The family of the late Adams Mahama, a husband, a father, a leader, and our irreplaceable light, has been forced to witness a spectacle of breathtaking cruelty. A recent interview granted by the former NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko, in which he audaciously paints himself as rather a victim in the brutal crime that stole our beloved from us, has poured more acid into wounds that have never healed.

As Muslims, our hearts are anchored in the Almighty Allah. We have always trusted in His divine justice, for we knew in our shattered souls that no earthly court could ever truly rectify the void left by this monstrous act. But even in our deepest grief, we never imagined the day would come when the instigator of our pain would not just remain silent, but would brazenly defend the evil that was unleashed upon our family. We are not surprised by the cowardice, but we are eviscerated by the audacity.

Our profound disappointment extends beyond the perpetrators to the very institutions sworn to protect us. We feel utterly abandoned by the President and the Attorney General, who have treated the cold-blooded murder of a citizen as a political chess game rather than a sacred quest for truth and justice. Adams Mahama lived for the people, and he was killed for his principles. To see his case handled with such cold calculation is a second betrayal we are forced to endure.

To Paul Afoko, we issue this direct and final advice: cease defiling the memory of our beloved Adams. Stop weaving his name into your self-serving lies. Your decision to break a decade of silence is not a mark of courage; it is a testament to your shameful character. That you can speak while a widow still grieves her husband and children grow up forever haunted by their father’s absence is not a point of pride.

Our beloved Adams did not die quickly. He suffered. And in his final, agonizing moments, with a strength that defies comprehension, he named his attackers: Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi. That was the will of Allah, a truth etched in his final breath, and no amount of political maneuvering or false narration can ever erase it.

We have nowhere left to turn but to the heavens. When the courts of man fail, we place our absolute faith in the Court of the Almighty. We now leave Paul Afoko, his brother Gregory, Asabke Alangdi, and all who had a hand in this heinous act, in the capable hands of Allah, the All-Knowing, the Ultimate Judge. He alone sees the full truth. He alone will deliver the final verdict.

Our confidence in the President, the Attorney General, and the justice system of this land is broken. Our trust is in Allah alone.

    Signed,

*The Grieving Family of the Late Adams Mahama*

    End.
