As part of activities leading up to the Achimota School Centenary in 2027, the Old Achimotan Association (OAA) has developed a 24-month calendar of sporting events, which includes tennis competitions scheduled for January 2026 and February 2027.
This year’s competition will be held at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, 31 January 2026, commencing at 8:00 a.m.
In an effort to generate enthusiasm and rekindle tradition, the OAA has decided to revive the Triangular Games—a popular annual sporting fixture during the 1970s and early 1980s. As a pilot initiative, alumni of the participating schools from that era have been invited to take part, ahead of plans to scale the event into a larger inter-school competition.
The participating schools are Achimota School, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School, Holy Child School, Presbyterian Boys’ School (PRESEC), Legon, and Aburi Girls’ School.
Achimota School’s history is defined by what has come to be known as the Achimota Experiment—a bold and visionary educational philosophy developed by Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, Rev. Alexander Garden Fraser, and Sir Gordon Guggisberg.
This experiment rejected the notion that education should be either purely academic or purely vocational. Instead, it promoted holistic education—the balanced training of the head, the hand, and the heart.
Sport was central to the Achimota Experiment, serving as a practical laboratory for discipline, teamwork, service, and leadership.
Through sport, students trained the body, strengthened the will, and fostered team spirit. Sporting activities developed physical fitness, endurance, mental toughness, healthy competition, and stress management.
Team sports taught lessons no classroom could—such as sacrifice for the collective, trust and coordination, and dignity in both victory and defeat. They reinforced fair play, ethical conduct, integrity under pressure, and respect for rules and authority.
Over the next two years, the Old Achimotan Association will continue to collaborate with various schools through sports, in support of youth development and in celebration of sporting icons whose legacy has helped raise high the flag of Ghana.
