The Old Achimotan Association (OAA) has successfully organised a one-day Inter-School Alumni Tennis Competition at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club as part of activities leading up to Achimota’s centenary celebration in 2027.

The maiden edition brought together alums from seven prestigious schools, including Achimota School, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School, Holy Child School, Presbyterian Boys’ School (PRESEC) Legon, and Aburi Girls’ School.

The tournament aimed to foster social interaction, networking, and healthy rivalry among old students. Matches were played across several categories, including Ladies’ Singles, Men’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Doubles events.

In the Ladies’ Singles, Wesley Girls’ High School defeated Holy Child School 6–4, while Achimota School secured a 6–2 victory over Aburi Girls’ School. In the Men’s Singles, PRESEC, Legon beat Adisadel College 6–3, 7–5, and Mfantsipim School overcame Achimota School 6–0, 6–4.

Other notable results included PRESEC defeating Adisadel College 6–1, 6–2 in the Men’s 45 years and above category, while Mfantsipim School edged Achimota School 6–1, 0–6. In the Men’s Seniors, PRESEC beat Adisadel College 6–1, 6–1, with Mfantsipim School achieving the same score over Achimota School.

In the Mixed Doubles, the PRESEC–Aburi Girls’ pairing defeated Mfantsipim School–Wesley Girls’ High School 6–3. Aburi Girls’ School won the Ladies’ Doubles, beating Holy Child School 6–3, while Wesley Girls’ High School defeated Achimota School 6–2. In Men’s Doubles, PRESEC beat Mfantsipim School 6–3, and Adisadel College recorded a 6–2 win over Achimota School.

At the end of the competition, Adisadel College emerged as the winners of the Men’s Doubles, defeating PRESEC in the final. At the same time, PRESEC and Aburi Girls’ School claimed the Mixed Doubles title after overcoming Achimota School.

Speaking after their victory, Mixed Doubles winner Felix Kabutey of PRESEC said, “Sports help train the body, strengthen the will, and foster team spirit. Sporting activities also promote physical fitness, mental toughness, healthy competition, and stress management.”

His partner, Madam Reginal Osei Boadi from Aburi Girls’ School, expressed gratitude for the win and promised a more substantial showing in future editions.

Captain of the Men’s Doubles winning team from Mfantsipim School, Abeiku Yorkson, noted, “Team sports teach lessons beyond the classroom, including sacrifice, trust, coordination, fair play, and respect for rules and authority.”

Chairman of the Fundraising and Sponsorship Committee, Leslie Awere-Kyere, explained that the competition is part of efforts to revive the popular Triangular Games that were prominent in the 1970s and early 1980s.

He added that the event is being piloted with alums from that era, with plans to expand into a larger inter-school competition.

Trophies were awarded to outstanding players and teams across the various categories. The Old Achimotan Association said it will continue to collaborate with sister schools over the next two years through sports to promote youth development and celebrate sporting icons whose legacy continues to raise Ghana’s flag high.
