In a landmark event steeped in pride and purpose, Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) held its first official graduation and conferral ceremony on Saturday, July 19, 2025, following its receipt of a Presidential Charter last year.

The theme of the event, “Empowered to Lead, Equipped to Transform,” resonated powerfully throughout the day’s proceedings, symbolizing the institution’s evolution from Laweh University College to a fully-fledged, autonomous university.

The ceremony, held at the university’s main campus in Accra, brought together a distinguished assembly of academia, public service leaders, and guests from Ghana and abroad. Among the highlights was the conferral of honorary degrees on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno and Telecel Ghana CEO Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, both lauded as exemplary leaders in security and digital innovation respectively.

    *A Historic Milestone*

In his welcome address, HE HRM Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, Chairman of the University Council, emphasized the significance of the charter, describing it as “a symbol of the Republic’s trust in Accra Met’s academic integrity and future.” He called the ceremony “a celebration of perseverance and vision fulfilled.”

Vice Chancellor Prof. Goski Alabi delivered a stirring report, noting that although the graduating class enrolled under Laweh University College, “they graduate as the final pioneers and first torchbearers of Accra Met’s new legacy.” She also announced new graduate and undergraduate programmes aligned with national development goals, including PhDs in Leadership and Finance, LLB, and MScs in Cybersecurity, Energy, and Sustainable Development.

    *Honouring Icons of Impact*

In a moment of prestige and gratitude, the university conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D) on IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, recognizing his transformative leadership in law enforcement, public trust, and national security. In his response, the IGP expressed humility and encouraged graduates to “lead with discipline and serve with purpose.”

Likewise, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai received an Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) for her trailblazing contributions to female leadership in STEM and digital transformation. “Empowering others is the greatest form of leadership,” she said in her acceptance speech.

    *GTEC Backs Private Universities*

Speaking as Guest of Honour, Justice Barimah Yaw Kodie Oppong, Director of Legal Education in Ghana, praised the university’s mission and called on graduates to be “custodians of justice and truth.”

Delivering a powerful keynote, GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor highlighted the Commission’s transition to a “value-based accreditation model” and called for free tuition support to be extended to private universities, echoing the Vice Chancellor’s earlier appeal.

    *Honouring Excellence Within*

Special awards were presented to members of the university community, including:

Prof. Esi Awuah – Founder’s Heritage Award for composing the school anthem.

Mr. Enoch Adamah – Beacon of Dedication Award.

Mr. Lawerence Alantee – Loyal Service Award.

Mr. Maxwell Kattah – Excellence in Teaching Award.

    *Global Vision, Local Roots*

Prof. Alabi shared the university’s ambition to expand its international student base to 20 countries within five years, already boasting learners from over 12 countries. She also announced the construction of a state-of-the-art facility along the Spintex Road, integrating AI learning technologies and academic innovation.

The day ended with heartfelt valedictorian remarks, the Founder’s blessings, and celebratory photo sessions—marking not just a graduation, but a rebirth.

    *Conclusion*

As the university anthem echoed through the venue, it was clear that Accra Metropolitan University is not only living up to its name, but rewriting what a “metropolitan university” can be—bold, inclusive, transformative, and global.

“Go forward knowing you’ve been empowered to lead, not just with titles, but with values,” Prof. Alabi told the graduates.

“Go forth equipped to transform not just your lives—but your world.”

Accra Metropolitan University celebrates its first graduation since gaining charter status, conferring degrees and honoring IGP Yohuno and Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai in a historic ceremony themed “Empowered to Lead, Equipped to Transform.”
