Accra Girls’ Senior High School erupted in celebration as Joyce Nana Yaa Mensah, the school’s proud alumna and lead actress in the film Elubo, received a heroic welcome after winning the Best Actress Award in France.

The award marks a defining moment for both the actress and Ghana’s film industry. Elubo, directed by Nana OA, has already been selected by 18 international film festivals, positioning it as a groundbreaking project in African cinema.

The headmistress of Accra Girls’ SHS, Mrs. Fifty Andoh, praised Joyce Nana Yaa Mensah for her resilience and talent, encouraging her to remain focused and continue serving as a role model for young women.

“We are proud of her achievements and the global spotlight she has brought to Ghanaian cinema. She is an inspiration to every student here,” Mrs. Andoh said.

Critics have hailed Elubo as part of a new wave of African films breaking borders by tackling urgent societal issues. Inspired by the tragic story of the Takoradi missing girls, the film delves deep into the dark realities of kidnapping and human trafficking in West Africa.

The movie’s success has sparked wider global conversations on human rights and child protection, themes that resonate beyond Ghana’s borders. With more screenings scheduled at major international festivals, expectations are high that Elubo will continue to elevate African cinema on the world stage.

For Joyce Nana Yaa Mensah, this award is more than personal recognition it represents a victory for Ghana’s storytelling tradition and the fight against social injustices.

As she stood before hundreds of students at Accra Girls, her message was simple yet powerful:

“This win is for every young girl who dares to dream.”
