The arrest of alleged cyber-fraud mastermind Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been confirmed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which describes him as one of the most notorious online scammers in Ghana.

Abu Trica is believed to have played a key role in an $8 million romance-scam network that targeted elderly individuals in the United States.

EOCO announced his arrest in a statement issued on December 12, 2025, following an operation carried out on December 11, 2025.

Abu Trica indicted in US for $8m romance fraud, arrested by authorities in Ghana

The move came after months of joint investigations with the FBI, INTERPOL, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and the Office of the Attorney General.

Investigators say the syndicate relied on sophisticated AI-generated identities to deceive victims, engage them in online relationships, and swindle them out of money and valuable items.

According to EOCO, Abu Trica is set to be extradited to the United States to face charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money-laundering conspiracy, and a forfeiture specification. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

EOCO described the arrest as a huge achievement in ongoing efforts to combat cross-border cybercrime in Ghana and praised both Ghanaian agencies and the FBI for their cooperation.
