Kwame Baffoe, better known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has levelled severe allegations against former President John Dramani Mahama. He claimed Mahama collected GH¢15 million in ex-gratia payments after leaving government in 2017. Abronye DC claims he has official paperwork to back up his accusations.

In a public statement, Abronye DC said, “I have the documents to prove it.” He requested precise data from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department about Mahama’s ex-gratia payments, claiming to have gotten records revealing the total value of GH¢15 million throughout the years.

Ex-gratia payments, which are often made to former presidents, have been a source of contention in Ghana. While it is widely acknowledged that previous presidents are entitled to such payments, the precise amounts and regularity of these distributions have frequently stirred controversy. Mahama has repeatedly denied accepting excessive payments following his term.

Abronye DC’s comment has rekindled the discussion and elicited diverse reactions. NPP supporters have backed Abronye DC, asking on public authorities to be more transparent and accountable. Meanwhile, Mahama’s team has denied the charges as politically driven and unfounded, accusing Abronye DC of wanting to harm the former president’s reputation.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has yet to react on the allegations, leaving the matter unsettled as the dispute continues.
