Some eligible voters within the Ablekuma North constituency will head to the polls today, Friday, July 11, 2025, to elect a Member of Parliament and bring an end to months of electoral uncertainty.

The elections, taking place in 19 constituencies, aim to resolve a prolonged dispute and restore parliamentary representation to the area, which has been without an MP since December 2024.

The political impasse stems from the December 7, 2024, general elections, where the outcome of the parliamentary contest in Ablekuma North became one of the most hotly contested results in the country.

Disagreements between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) centered on the authenticity of pink sheets and the collation process across the 62 polling stations.

The Electoral Commission (EC) managed to collate results from 59 stations, leaving three unresolved, which led to legal battles. In January 2025, the High Court ordered the EC to complete the collation and declare the results.

However, the EC identified irregularities, including missing endorsements in 19 polling stations, and subsequently announced a rerun in those areas to uphold electoral integrity.

The NPP strongly opposed the EC’s decision, insisting that its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had already secured victory in December by a margin of 414 votes.

The party sought an injunction to stop the rerun, but the court dismissed the case on July 9, describing the application as “unmeritorious.”

Despite the party’s official boycott, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie defied the directive and confirmed her participation in the rerun.

“I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she told journalists on July 10.

Meanwhile, the NDC remains confident. The party maintains that its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, rightfully won the December election and is determined to secure victory in the rerun.

“We believe the people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said Joshua Alabi, NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections, during a final campaign rally on Thursday July 10,
