Former Ghana international Awudu Issaka has named Abedi Pele, Mohammed Polo, and Opoku Sampene as the most skilful Ghanaian footballers he has ever seen.

Issaka, who was part of Ghana’s U-17 World Cup-winning squad in 1995, made the remarks in a recent interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, paying tribute to the legendary trio for their flair and technical brilliance.

“I’ll go for Maestro Abedi Pele and Mohammed Polo. I remember one time in Kotobabi when I saw Polo play. I showed off some of my skills, and he responded with his, but just one move from him made me understand why his name carries such weight. It was a powerful moment that stayed with me,” Issaka said.

He also spoke highly of Opoku Sampene, recalling how the player’s performances left a lasting impression on him during his early days in Sunyani.

“I learned a lot from him, and today, by God’s grace, I finally have the chance to say it. At the Sunyani Zongo Park, I saw so many incredible skills from him. I ‘stole’ quite a few for myself. If I hadn’t chosen him, something would’ve felt incomplete. Anyone who knows him knows exactly what I mean,” he added.

Issaka was widely regarded as one of the most skilful players of his time. After starring in youth football, he earned moves to European clubs including Anderlecht, Auxerre, and 1860 Munich.

He also played for several clubs in Ghana, including Prampram Mighty Royals, Liberty Professionals, and Tema Youth.

Issaka’s comments add to the long-standing admiration for Abedi Pele and Mohammed Polo, who are both considered icons in Ghanaian football history, as well as Opoku Sampene, a respected name especially among fans from the Bono region.
