Abbosey Okai, a vibrant suburb of the Greater Accra Region, witnessed an extraordinary display of culture and tradition on March 31, 2025, as the Akumadgan Paramount Zongo Chief in the Ga Traditional Council, Sarki Lawal Garbey, led a grand horse-riding festival to mark the Sallah Day celebration.

The event drew hundreds of attendees from diverse backgrounds, including traditional leaders, community elders, and opinion leaders from various Zongo communities in Greater Accra and beyond. Dignitaries from different traditional councils and cultural groups also graced the occasion, adding prestige to the momentous celebration.

Organized under the leadership of Sarki Lawal Garbey, the event served as a powerful platform to showcase the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the Hausa and Zongo communities in Ghana. Attendees were treated to a captivating display of Hausa traditions, with exhilarating horse-riding performances, cultural exhibitions, and other symbolic displays that highlighted the essence of unity and identity among the Zongo people.

Beyond the festivities, the gathering aimed to strengthen bonds among tribal chiefs in Zongo communities and educate attendees on the historical significance of various ethnic groups within the Zongo settlements. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the enduring contributions of the Hausa language, which holds a unique place in Ghana’s history. Notably, Hausa was the first language broadcast on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) radio and remains an internationally recognized language spoken across West Africa.

The successful celebration reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Zongo communities while fostering intercommunal harmony and unity. The event left an indelible mark on participants, who lauded Sarki Lawal Garbey’s visionary leadership in bringing people together through culture and tradition.
