While taking part in a high-stakes operation against illicit mining (galamsey), Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, a police officer, sadly drowned in the River Offin at Assin Asaman this morning. Local police and rescue crews conducted a thorough four-hour search before recovering the officer’s body.

Officer Dogbe’s body was taken to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu after being recovered from the river. After examining him, the on-call medical staff verified his death. The town and the local police department have been rocked by the news of the officer’s tragic death.

As part of the Central North Regional Police Command’s continuous efforts to stop illegal mining, which has been wreaking havoc on the Central Region’s ecology, the deadly tragedy happened during a swoop operation.

Suspected illegal miners reportedly ran in different directions when they saw the police coming, with some of them trying to cross the River Offin to get away. Officer Dogbe lost his balance when traversing the perilous terrain along the riverside while attempting to seize and destroy mining equipment. He slipped into the water and was unable to recover.

Since then, the body has been placed for preservation at St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

The loss of Constable Dogbe, a committed officer who was a part of the larger effort to combat illicit activities in the area and protect the environment, has been deeply regretted by the Central North Regional Police Command. Despite the significant toll this act has taken, the police department has promised to keep up its efforts against Galamsey.

The circumstances surrounding the officer’s murder are the subject of a thorough investigation by the authorities, and work is being done to solve the larger problem of illicit mining in the area.

The dangers that police officers and other security professionals confront when they risk their lives to defend their communities and the environment are painfully brought home by this tragedy.
