Thousands of boozy revellers hit the town last night – making the most of the festive season before Santa arrived.

Partygoers across the UK rang in the special day in style, locating the few open bars and clubs before dancing the night away.

They appeared full of Christmas cheer donning sparkly outfits and festive jumpers – but many are bound to wake up hungover this morning.

Images show groups of families and friends smiling and embracing as they celebrated into the early hours.

Many were wrapped up in coats and scarves to avoid the winter chill, but some brave souls bore all in dresses and skirts.

Let’s hope bleary eyes and sore heads won’t damper festive spirits as Christmas Day gets underway.
