Ghanaian entertainment pundit cum member of the manifesto committee on creative arts for the NPP, Kwaku Osei Krankye Asiedu (KOKA), has called for more professionals from the creative arts sector to get involved in politics and governance.

In an interview with GhanaWeb at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) final rally on December 5, 2024, KOKA highlighted that many parliamentarians and policymakers lack an understanding of the creative business, which has led to the sector being overlooked and underdeveloped.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of figures like Mark Okraku-Mantey, the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, but emphasised that the core decision-makers often lack a background in the arts sector.

“The Deputy Minister, Mark Okraku-Mantey, does all the groundwork, ensuring that the minister is well-informed to make decisions at the cabinet level. He has done a lot for the creative and tourism sectors. He understands the business, and his advice and insight are crucial in the decision-making process,” KOKA said.

KOKA further pointed out that the main challenge lies within parliamentary committees.

According to him, the fragmented structure of committees under which the creative arts, culture, and tourism sectors fall, such as the Trade Select Committee, the Culture Committee, and the Tourism Committee under Sports, hinders strategic policymaking.

“We need to consolidate these areas under one select committee to effectively grow our industry,” he added.

KOKA also called for a review of the constitution to redefine mandates and improve governance structures, ensuring that creative industries receive the attention they deserve.

“The next government will work to merge these three sectors into one select committee. This will help us pass laws and create policies that will drive the growth of our industry,” he added.

KOKA reassured the public that the NPP is committed to better representation and support for the creative arts sector, with a focus on gradual but meaningful progress.
