A social media user, Juliana Abane PhD, has expressed her concerns about the Free SHS policy in Ghana. She shared a personal experience about her nephew who attends school under the program. According to Juliana, her nephew returned from school sick and fragile, which she attributes to the poor quality of food served under the Free SHS program.
Juliana’s concerns were sparked by a video of a Free SHS beneficiary who revealed that she does not eat the free SHS food often because it makes her fall sick. The beneficiary mentioned that the food is not always good, citing groundnut soup as an example.
Juliana’s nephew’s experience is not an isolated incident. There have been reports of serious food shortages in Senior High Schools across the country. Students are being forced to eat the same meals up to three times daily, which is unacceptable.
The Free SHS policy was introduced by the current government to provide free education to students in Senior High Schools. While the policy has been praised for increasing access to education, its implementation has been marred by challenges, including food shortages and poor quality of food.
Juliana’s reaction highlights the need for the government to address the challenges facing the Free SHS program. Parents and guardians are concerned about the health and well-being of their children, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that they receive quality education and care.
The government must take urgent steps to address the food shortages and poor quality of food in Senior High Schools. This includes increasing funding for the Free SHS program, improving food procurement and distribution systems, and ensuring that schools have adequate resources to provide quality education and care to students.
