During a recent interview on Accra 100,5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo show hosted by Dr Kay, musician Jah Lead openly supported the decriminalisation of marijuana, emphasising its medicinal and economic benefits.

Jah Lead noted that while marijuana use was once strictly penalised, recent reforms have approved its use for medicinal purposes, a move he believes should be expanded to harness the plant’s full potential.

“It is in the system now, and it is used for pharmaceutical purposes,” he said.

“I see it has the potential to generate more income than gold.

Unlike gold, which is just a metal you wear around your neck, marijuana is a plant that can never be a criminal.”

He highlighted that Israel is the leading country in research on the plant, noting how much value can be derived from its cultivation and use.

“Israel has done extensive research and is leading the way in understanding its benefits,” Jah Lead said.

He further explained that marijuana has a wide range of practical uses, from medicine to clothing, and stressed the importance of being informed and educated about its benefits.

“The plant has useful purposes, and we should focus on those,” he added.

Jah Lead also referenced comments made by former Narcotics Control Board officials Akwasi Sarpong and Kofi Annan, who have advocated exploring marijuana’s revenue-generating potential.

Drawing on international examples, he encouraged a measured approach if Ghana were to fully embrace legalisation, emphasising education and responsible management.

“It can never be like people assume. Being honest and informed about its purpose is key,” he said.

He also cited biblical references to marijuana, noting that the plant has historically been associated with healing and spiritual practices.

“Even in the Bible, it mentions eating the fruit and using the leaves to heal.

So, we should understand its value and purpose,” he concluded.
