President John Dramani Mahama has once again aligned himself with Ghana’s conservative social position, indicating that he would approve the anti-LGBTQ+ bill should it secure parliamentary approval. His comments, delivered during a courtesy visit by the Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday, add new momentum to the national conversation around sexuality, legislation, and cultural identity.

Mahama emphasized that his views are rooted in what he called Ghana’s “long-standing family and moral principles,” asserting that gender is biologically assigned at birth. He stressed that these beliefs place him firmly in line with the Christian Council’s long-held doctrines.

Notably, Mahama echoed the Speaker of Parliament’s call for the bill to be reintroduced for renewed debate, suggesting that a careful legislative process is essential to address any pending ambiguities or proposed amendments.

While debates continue around human rights implications and Ghana’s obligations under international law, Mahama’s latest statement positions him clearly on the side of Parliament and public consensus. He noted that the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people—expressed through their elected legislators—will determine his final action.

“When the people’s Parliament passes the bill and sends it to the Presidency, I will sign,” he said, leaving little doubt about his intentions should the legislative body give its approval.
