A teenager has caused chaos on a major Australian road after he climbed a crane and refused to come down for eight hours.

The 19-year-old, armed with cable ties, was suspended 20 storeys high as police negotiated with him on Saturday night on King William Street in Adelaide‘s CBD.

He was seen sitting on the edge of the crane about 70 metres high at a commercial building site at about 8pm as crowds of bemused onlookers watched from below.

Witness Mikaela Mudie told Seven News at one stage the man precariously moved from inside the crane to the outside and looked down at the ground.

‘So that was when we were all really concerned for his safety. And we kept watching, and he kept going higher and higher,’ she said.

Police officers called in the Special Tasks and Rescue Group and specialist negotiators to urge the 19-year-old to climb back down.

It took eight hours for the teen to finally descend from the crane before immediately being put into an ambulance and driven to hospital at about 4.30am.

The 19-year-old Hackham West man was arrested and is expected to be charged with trespass and obstructing a public place.

South Australia Police were contacted for further comment.

The footage went viral with many criticising the man for wasting resources over a stunt.

‘Crazy. He put not only himself at risk but other people,’ one said.

    ‘What a f***wit,’ said another.
