Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has indicated that the National Theatre in Accra is finally set for a facelift, with the 2026 national budget allocating funds for its rehabilitation.

The minister, addressing Parliament on November 13, 2025, explained that the renovation is part of a plan to revive Ghana’s cultural infrastructure and restore performance venues as key spaces in urban life.

He added that government will also start the process for a second national theatre in Kumasi, including securing land and preparing the design.

“In 2026, government will rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra. We will also commence site acquisition and design of a second national theatre in Kumasi,” Ato Forson said.

These improvements will help the theatre host bigger productions, support year-round programming and boost revenue from ticket sales and venue rentals.

Management at the theatre has already been preparing by strengthening governance and rebuilding the institution’s capacity so the facility can return to consistent use.

The restoration also comes with clear practical goals. Upgrades to sound, lighting and stage equipment will give Ghanaian companies the tools needed for larger performances and touring shows.

The plan includes better rehearsal rooms, improved backstage areas and enhanced accessibility for audiences.

The aim is a modernized complex capable of hosting international festivals, drawing cultural tourism and supporting more jobs across production, technical and front-of-house roles.
