Ghanaian filmmaker Beverly Afaglo has lamented the lack of financial support from banks and corporate institutions towards the country’s movie industry.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on November 12, 2025, the award-winning actress compared Ghana’s entertainment sector to that of Nigeria.

She stated that Ghanaian investors and banks are unwilling to take risks to support the creative arts.

“Nigerians are daring. They don’t mind putting x amount in the business, provided you’ve assured them that they will get their money back. They don’t care how long; they’re patient. This is what I want too, I will wait and get it back,” she said.

According to Beverly, most wealthy individuals and banks in Ghana are hesitant to invest in the movie industry because they view it as unprofitable.

“We are not patient. I know some rich people who, whenever I talk about the movies, they’re not interested because they feel it’s a waste of money. Even Nigerians think of when they will get their money back, but some just want to support your craft.

“They love the fact that they want to even feel good and say Beverly is my friend without them thinking of what they will get so they are supporting,” she shared.

She noted that in Nigeria, both banks and private companies actively sponsor and finance creative projects, something that is missing in Ghana.

“Banks are supporting, companies are supporting the business. In Ghana, banks don’t support anything. Even events that are for awards and stuff to recognise hard work, banks are not ready to support these events, how much more a movie,” she added.
