Former Vice President and aspiring NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his disappointment with some of his opponents in the flagbearer race over what he termed as ‘tribalistic’ comments against him.
Dr Bawumia, who is currently on his campaign tour of the Western Region, spoke during a rally where he noted that some of his opponents have labelled him an outsider or “slave” brought into the party despite his long-standing involvement and service.
“Sometimes you hear things that make you sad as an individual. Some of my opponents have gone around saying that Dr Bawumia is a stranger to this party. They have said that I’m an outsider. They even said that I was brought in as a slave to this party,” he bemoaned.
He warned that such comments are rooted in tribalism, which he described as dangerous and divisive and urged party members to reject this form of politics.
“This ‘tribalism’, we should be very, very careful about it. The people who say those things don’t know the history of our party,” he added.

Bawumia emphasised that leadership in the NPP ought to reflect its diverse history, which stemmed from the amalgamation of different political parties.
“If you look at the history of our party, you see that the antecedents, we started with an amalgamation of parties from different regions that came together to form our party.
“The Northern People’s Party with SD Dumbo as the head, the National Liberation Movement with Busia and Baffour Osei Akoto, the Muslim Association Party was there; the Togoland Congress under SG Antor was there.
“The Anlo Youth Organisation under Modesto Apalo was there. All these came to form the United Party. This is where we came,” he said.
The former vice president urged members of the NPP to reject tribal and exclusionary politics and instead uphold the party’s long-standing values of unity, tolerance and mutual respect.
“Such talks create division, and we don’t need it in our party. We don’t need this in Ghana. What we need is unity and respect for all members in our party, so we should all reject such divisive comments,” he added.
