By CLAIRE ELLIOT FOR THE SCOTTISH DAILY MAIL

    Published: 15:46 EST, 11 November 2025 | Updated: 16:04 EST, 11 November 2025

He has been delivering presents to children around the world for centuries with the help of his trusted reindeer.

But one city school has come under fire after a teacher is alleged to have told pupils that Father Christmas is ‘not real’.

The faux pas is said to have happened at Greenbrae Primary School in Aberdeen during a lesson on All Saints’ Day.

This led to some of the nine and 10-year-old pupils asking questions about other saints, including St Nicholas – also known as Santa Claus.

Parents complained at the way the discussions were handled, which prompted Aberdeen City Council to investigate.

A spokesman from the authority said last night: ‘Aberdeen City Council is aware that a group of primary six pupils engaged in a conversation about All Saints’ Day, which led to some children posing questions about other saints, including St Nicholas.

‘Families can be assured that investigation learnings have been shared to support our staff to help navigate sensitive discussions.

‘The council values the magic and joy of the festive season and appreciates the small number of parents and carers who brought their concerns to us.’

But some parents at the school claimed the alleged slip-up had ‘ruined the magic of Christmas’ for some children.

One parent said: ‘This shouldn’t be a topic that is discussed at school time at all’, while another added: ‘Kids aren’t young for very long and Christmas is so special for them.’

Aberdeen councillor and education convenor Martin Greig echoed this, saying: ‘Santa is an important part of the Christmas celebrations.

‘It’s great to see the happiness and fun that Santa brings to children and families. Each year, the experience creates lovely, long lasting memories.’
