The West Akim Municipal Assembly (WAMA) in Asamankese of the Eastern Region has identified alternative routes to divert heavy-duty trucks that are often involved in road crashes while using the town roads.

This follows the presentation of a report by the Municipal Security Council, which attributed the frequent road crashes to the sloppy nature of the road from the Asamankese Police Station to the Commercial Banks area.

The most recent incident involved a heavily loaded truck running into some hawkers along the pavement.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ms Paulina Akabila, disclosed this at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the General Assembly in Asamankese last Thursday. The meeting was held to brief members on the latest developments in the municipality and chart a new way forward.

She indicated that the routes had been identified and that work would soon commence to prepare them for use by heavy-duty trucks en route to Akim-Oda and other destinations.

According to her, these trucks would no longer be allowed to pass through the main town, and she appealed to traders not to endanger their lives by selling close to the roads.

The MCE further indicated that a sanitation task force had been established to stop people from selling on pavements and creating filth, as well as to instill discipline on the roads.

Ms Akabila said the DRIP Management Committee had been tasked to develop modalities for the use and maintenance of equipment when the assembly begins reshaping major roads, especially those leading to food basket communities.

To curb the devastation caused by illegal mining (galamsey) activities, the MCE noted that the Municipal Security Council would form a task force to embark on unannounced swoops on illegal mining sites, engage chiefs in affected areas to dissuade them from permitting such activities, and ensure the reclamation of all open pits.

She highlighted that concession owners would be held responsible should any illegal mining occur on their concessions, adding that plans were far advanced to profile all miners in the municipality.

Moreover, the MCE stated that tendering processes had reached advanced stages for the award of several infrastructure projects, including:

    • A six-unit classroom block with auxiliary facilities and a two-unit kindergarten block at Bungo-Asamankese.
    • The provision of seven mechanised boreholes.
    • The completion of a six-unit classroom block, office, store, and CHPS compound at Nkurakan to promote socio-economic development in the area.

She added that President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to pay allowances to assembly members had begun in earnest, with two months’ allowances already paid to 43 members, while payments for the remaining four months were being processed by the Bank of Ghana.
