It can be recalled that in 2006, Ofori Amponsah swept 7 awards, including Artiste of the Year at the VGMAs, a move that has since gone down as one of the most iconic moments in Ghana’s music history.

Speaking in a recent interview on Hitz FM, Ofori Amponsah recounted how it all happened for him.

Ofori said that he came from the era of Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi, where it was difficult to rise above them.

He explained that, for instance, after releasing a successful song – ‘Asew’ – and getting six nominations for the song at the VGMAs in 2001, he went to the wards with a lot of confidence that he was going to win some awards.

“Asew had six nominations, so I went there with all my girlfriends thinking I was going to win some awards, but I didn’t win a single one that night,” he recounted.

Ofori Amponsah further explained that that night motivated and encouraged him to work harder.

“That encouraged me to work and work harder. I went back to the drawing board, wrote some songs, and that was it,” he explained.

Ofori added that although his song, “Otoolege” took the awards, “Asew” was his greatest hit and was supposed to win an award.

“Asew was my greatest hit and should have won an award, but broken heart brings more money,” he said.
