Pregnant women attending the Kaneshie Polyclinic’s Pregnancy School have received vital education on breast cancer awareness, early detection and healthy living, as part of a collaborative health sensitization programme held on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Addressing participants, Dr Kristina Brew Daniel, Medical Superintendent of the Kaneshie Polyclinic, underscored the importance of continuous education and screening for breast cancer, stressing that early detection remains the most effective way to save lives.

She noted that both men and women are at risk of developing breast cancer, though it is more prevalent among women.

“Breast cancer is not just a women’s issue; men can also get it. That’s why public education is critical all year round, not just in October,” Dr Brew Daniel said.

She further explained that most cancers have no direct cause but that identifying risk factors and screening regularly can make treatment easier and more affordable.

The Medical Superintendent also cautioned against the use of herbal or traditional treatments for breast lumps, particularly among teenagers.

“When you find any lump, don’t go to a herbalist or apply concoctions. Bring your child to the hospital so that doctors can examine and manage it properly,” she advised.

A midwife at the facility, Naa Yomoley, also urged women to take changes in their breast appearance seriously.

“When you see any colour changes or swelling in your breast, don’t sit at home. Come to the hospital for a check-up,” she advised, adding that good nutrition and self-care can help reduce cancer risks.

The session was also graced by veteran actor Fred Amugi and gospel musician Joyce Blessing, who encouraged expectant mothers to prioritize their health.

The initiative, organised by the Kaneshie Polyclinic in partnership with Flora Tissues and its subsidiary, Flora Kids Baby Diapers, aimed at empowering expectant mothers with essential knowledge on breast health, nutrition and self-care during and after pregnancy.

Madam Barbara Inkoom, Marketing Director for Flora Tissues, noted that the company’s partnership with the Kaneshie Polyclinic reflects its commitment to supporting community health initiatives, especially those focused on women and children.
