The Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Ahmed Ibrahim, has reiterated government’s commitment to supporting traders affected by recent fire outbreaks in major markets across the country.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during question time, the minister highlighted several interventions undertaken to assist victims and to prevent future incidents, particularly in Kantamanto and Timber markets.

He revealed that President John Dramani Mahama had donated GH¢1 million towards the reconstruction of the Kantamanto market, Accra, a gesture that was complemented by additional funding from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

According to Ibrahim, the assembly was working closely with traders and market associations to identify further avenues of support.

He added that measures such as demarcation and the creation of access lanes had been implemented to enhance accessibility and curb the recurrence of fire outbreaks.

The minister further disclosed that the government, through collaboration with relevant agencies, had intensified fire safety education and inspections in major markets nationwide to improve preparedness and ensure compliance with safety standards.

“These interventions underscore the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and property while ensuring that our markets remain safe, organized, and vibrant centers of economic activity,” Ibrahim stated.
