Artiste manager Nana Poku Ashis has described the Ghana Music Awards as a prestigious and flagship award scheme that deserves to be protected and respected.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on October 31, 2025, he emphasised the influence and relevance of the awards both locally and across Africa.
“The Ghana Music Awards is a flagship event, and across the African continent, we are one of the leading awards when it comes to music. Nigerians can take The Headies — we’ve given it to them, no doubt. But when it comes to that music thing, we are far gone,” he said.
Entertainment industry should be driven by investors, not government – Ashis
Nana Poku Ashis recounted an experience outside Ghana that highlighted the award scheme’s reach beyond the country’s borders.
“I’ve been outside Ghana before, in one of the African countries, where they were watching the Ghana Music Awards in Benin. I was amazed, it tells you how big the award scheme is,” he recalled.
He further urged Ghanaians to appreciate and support the awards rather than constantly criticise them.
“This is all we have. Say whatever you want about the scheme, but this is the only prestigious platform we have for recognizing musicians. So why don’t we protect it?” he added.
