Ho, Volta Region – In a remarkable achievement, the Volta Region has demonstrated its potential to meet Ghana’s entire national rice demand, according to Mr. Bright Delali Kugbeadzor, the Volta/Oti Regional Manager of the National Food Buffer Stock Company Limited. Speaking on GBC Volta Star’s morning show with host Tony Mark-Boye on 30th October, 2025, Mr. Kugbeadzor emphasized the significance of local rice production, stating, “This year alone, the local rice production from the Volta Region can feed the entire nation of Ghana.” He stressed the importance of discipline in growing and sustaining local import substitution industries, saying, “It takes discipline to grow and sustain local import substitution industries across the world.”
He urged Ghanaians to develop a preference for local produce and highlighted the Volta Region’s efforts to increase rice production, which have yielded impressive results. The Volta/Oti Regional Manager’s statement comes amid efforts to promote local agricultural initiatives and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported rice. Government initiatives to support local farmers and improve agricultural productivity have contributed to the region’s success.
The Volta Region’s achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of local farmers, who have been supported by government initiatives and the Buffer Stock Company’s efforts. According to industry experts, the region’s rice production has been boosted by improved farming practices, increased access to markets, and government support.
The Volta Region is one of Ghana’s 16 administrative regions, located west of the Republic of Togo and east of Lake Volta. The region covers an area of 9,504 square kilometers, representing 3.9% of Ghana’s total land area. The capital, Ho, is a major urban center and home to the Volta Regional Museum, a cathedral, and a prison.
As Ghana celebrates the Volta Region’s achievement, stakeholders are calling for continued support for local agriculture to ensure sustainable growth and food security.
