British tourist dies two months after being ‘kicked in the head’ in Dublin city centre

    By CIARAN FOREMAN, TRAINEE REPORTER

    Published: 13:15 EDT, 28 October 2025 | Updated: 13:34 EDT, 28 October 2025

A British tourist has died two months after allegedly being kicked in the head in Dublin city centre.

The English man, in his early 40s, was taken to hospital after reports of a ‘serious assault’ in the Temple Bar Square area of the Irish capital in the early hours of August 21.

He was treated at Beaumont Hospital in the north of the city, and was placed into an induced coma before being later transferred back to the UK.

A Garda spokesperson said the man died on Saturday in Britain.

Darragh O’Brien, 22, was arrested and charged with assault causing harm in relation to the incident.

He remains before the courts and has yet to indicate a plea.

Garda said: ‘The man (40s) injured following a serious assault in Temple Bar on the 21st of August 2025 passed away in the UK on Saturday the 25th October 2025.

‘As this matter is now before the courts, this office will not be providing further information.’

The force said at the time of the alleged assault: ‘Gardaí in Pearse Street are appealing for witnesses in relation to a serious assault that occurred in the Temple Bar Square area of Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, Thursday 21st August 2025.

‘Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 12.30am.

‘A man, aged in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

‘The scene was preserved and a technical examination has been completed.

‘Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident or who may have video footage to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on (01) 6669000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

    ‘Investigations are ongoing.’

This is a breaking news story and is being updated.
