Gremio forward, Francis Amuzu has dismissed claims that his renewed desire to play for the Black Stars is driven by Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Francis Amuzu, his motivation to play for the Black Stars is far more personal and has nothing to do with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old, who previously turned down a national team invitation in 2022, recently declared his readiness to wear the Ghana jersey, a decision that has stirred mixed reactions among fans and pundits.

Many believe Amuzu’s timing is no coincidence, coming just days after Ghana qualified for the next World Cup.

But speaking to Asempa FM, the Belgium-born winger stressed that his choice stems from a deep sense of pride and a promise to his father that he will play for Ghana.

“To be honest, it is not for the World Cup. Two years ago, I made my Ghanaian passport. Now I’m reading news that because of the World Cup I want to come.

No, it is not because of that. It is also part of my decision to play, also because of my father,” Amuzu explained.

He further revealed that preparations for his switch to represent Ghana started long before the World Cup qualification was secured.

“My agent contacted someone in Ghana. They told me let’s make the passport ready and everything. I was like, no problem, I will do it for sure, so I did the passport and everything, and now I have my Ghanaian passport. I am proud of it because it can help me for many things, not only for the national team,” he added.

Amuzu’s connection to Ghana runs deep. His father, Theophilus Amuzu, is a former Hearts of Oak player who also represented Ghana at the U20 level.
