Alan Kyerematen, Leader and Founder of the United Party (UP), has highlighted the urgent need for a new political era in Ghana to challenge the long-standing duopoly of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on TV3, monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, October 17, 2025, he criticised the increasing divisiveness in the country’s politics, noting that the UP seeks to provide equal opportunities for all Ghanaians.

“If there was ever a time in this country where there was a clear need for a third party that would bridge the political divide, it is now. We seek to unite the nation and mobilise the collective strengths of all Ghanaians, irrespective of age, religion, or ethnic affiliation. We are taking the best out of the center-right and the center-left,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about monetisation in politics, Kyerematen emphasised that the UP operates differently.

“Only a small fraction of delegates benefit from monetisation. Most Ghanaians are against it. A party with the motto ‘Ghana First’ naturally attracts those seeking genuine representation,” he said.

He further expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, adding, “We are offering an alternative that speaks to the character, values, and aspirations of ordinary Ghanaians.”

The Movement for Change, founded by Kyerematen, has officially rebranded as the United Party (UP Plus).

The announcement was made at a ceremony in Accra on Thursday, October 16, 2025, marking what the group describes as a new phase in Ghana’s political landscape.

According to party executives, the rebranding represents a fresh vision aimed at breaking the dominance of the two major political parties.

It also reaffirms Kyerematen’s determination to contest the presidency on a platform of competence, inclusiveness, and integrity.
