Twelve years ago, today, October 15, 2013, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi witnessed one of the most unforgettable afternoons in Ghana’s football history.

The Black Stars dismantled Egypt 6–1 in the first leg of the 2014 FIFA World Cup playoff.

A result that not only shocked the continent but sent Ghana within touching distance of a third consecutive World Cup appearance.

Led by Kwasi Appiah, Ghana produced a performance that perfectly blended power, precision, and pride. Captain Asamoah Gyan opened the scoring inside five minutes before adding another in the second half.

Majeed Waris, Sulley Muntari, and Christian Atsu also got on the scoresheet, while an own goal by Wael Gomaa compounded Egypt’s misery.

The Pharaohs’ only consolation came from a Mohamed Aboutrika penalty just before halftime.

The 6–1 demolition left Egypt stunned and gave Ghana an unassailable advantage ahead of the return leg in Cairo, where the Black Stars eventually sealed qualification with a 7–3 aggregate win.
