The Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified that no levy will be imposed on the sporting sector as part of efforts to raise revenue for the Sports Development Fund.

Reports had suggested that a sports levy would be introduced by the government as the primary source of funding for the Sports Development Fund.

This information was reportedly shared by Evans Yeboah, Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, while discussing the fund project.

In response, Kwakye Ofosu refuted the claims, stating that Cabinet did not approve any such levy during its deliberations and urged the public to disregard the report.

“In the last few days, myjoyonline.com carried a story suggesting that Cabinet had approved a ‘Sports Levy’ as a primary funding source for the proposed Sports Development Fund. They quote one Evans Yeboah, Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, as the source of this report. For the avoidance of doubt, NO such levy has been proposed, nor has it been approved by Cabinet,” he wrote via X on October 10, 2025.

He added, “A proposed bill was sent to Cabinet and approved for the establishment of a Sports Development Fund. The document clearly outlines the sources of funding for the Sports Development Fund, and it does not include the imposition of any levy.”

The minister further noted that the fund will be financed through proceeds from gate fees from sports activities, betting companies, sports lotteries, and the transfer of athletes both within Ghana and abroad, among other sources.
