Popular Nigerian gospel singer Tim Godfrey has spoken out strongly against the criticism gospel artists face for charging performance fees.

Speaking in a recent video that’s now circulating online, he recounted his own experience of being paid with some tubers of yams and live chickens.

Godfrey expressed deep frustration over what he described as the mistreatment of gospel artists, particularly in Nigeria.

He addressed those who question why gospel musicians charge for their services, saying the judgment is not only unfair but also dehumanizing.

“Coming to Nigeria became difficult because of how artists are being mistreated, and I want to say it. All of those stories about why they’re charging and why they’re collecting money got me so angry. I said Why are people wicked? What sense does it make that people work so hard, and you’re saying…I have collected tubers of yams as honorarium, I have collected a full, live, breathing, walking chicken as honorarium, and that is what I am going to use to pay school fees, pay house rent, buy properties, and sustain. No, that’s so unfair, that is absolutely unfair.” He said

Godfrey’s comments have resonated with many, reigniting conversations about the need for fair compensation and respect for artists especially those working within faith-based circles.
